Port on the Adriatic coast, opposite Venice, in Friuli-Venezia-Giulia, Italy; including a large Slovene minority. It is the site of the International Center for Theoretical Physics, established 1964.
Trieste was under Austrian rule from 1382 (apart from Napoleonic occupation 1809–14) until transferred to Italy 1918. It was claimed after World War II by Yugoslavia; established as a Free Post 1947; the city and surrounding territory were divided 1954 between Italy and Yugoslavia. The territory is now part of Slovenia.
