(1915-1985) US jurist, appointed associate justice of the US Supreme Court 1958–81 by President Eisenhower. Seen as a moderate, he is known for upholding civil rights for minorities and for opinions on criminal procedure. He dissented in both Escabedo v Illinois 1964 and in In re Gault 1967, which gave juveniles due process rights.
Born in Chicago, Illinois, US, Stevens graduated from Yale University and Yale Law School and entered private practice in New York City and Cincinnati, Ohio. He was appointed judge of the US Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit 1954.

(1908-) US actor. He made his Broadway debut 1932 and soon after worked in Hollywood. Speaking with a soft, slow drawl, he specialized in the role of the stubbornly honest, ordinary American in such films as Mr Smith Goes to Washington 1939, The Philadelphia Story 1940 (Academy Award), It’s a Wonderful Life 1946, Harvey 1950, The Man from Laramie 1955, and Anatomy of a Murder 1959. His films with director Alfred Hitchcock include Rope 1948, Rear Window 1954, The Man Who Knew Too Much 1956, and Vertigo 1958.
Born in Indiana, Pennsylvania, he was an air force pilot in World War II.
