An industrial city in the European part of Russia.
Industrial port (chemicals, oil refining) on the river Volga in W central Russian Federation; It was established in the 1590s as a fortress to protect the Volga trade route. The German population was deported 1941; an association of Volga Germans in Bonn is helping them to return.
