Industrial port and capital (since 1854) of California, US, 130 km/80 mi NE of San Francisco; metropolitan area 1,481,100. It stands on the Sacramento River, which flows 615 km/382 mi through Sacramento Valley to San Francisco Bay. Industries include the manufacture of detergents and jet aircraft and food processing, including almonds, peaches, and pears.
It was founded as Fort Sutter 1848 on land bought by John Sutter 1839. Its old town has been restored. A deepwater port channel to San Francisco Bay was completed 1963.
