(1855-1919) Russian general. He served as a Chief of Staff in the Russo-Japanese war 1905 and then as minister of war. In World War I, he won considerable acclaim for his victories over the Austrians on the Galician front. Following the Russian Revolution March 1917, he helped secure the abdication of the Tsar, but he fell foul of the Council of Workers' and Soldiers' Deputies and was dismissed, to be murdered Jan 1919.
