1. A bay on the northern coast of Alaska where oil was discovered in 1968.
2. Unincorporated community in Alaska (USA).
Bay of the Arctic Ocean on the N coast (North Slope) of Alaska. An immense oil strike in the area in 1968 led to the construction of the 789-mi/1,270-km Trans-Alaska Pipeline, completed 1977, that carries oil from Prudhoe Bay to Valdez, on the S coast of Alaska. Almost 20% of US oil comes from the North Slope fields, although production has slowed.
