(1796-1859) US historian, author of History of the Reign of Ferdinand and Isabella, the Catholic 1838, History of the Conquest of Mexico 1843, and History of the Conquest of Peru 1847.

A former merchant sailor and labor-union official, he was member of parliament for Kingston-on-Hull (East) 1970–83 and since 1983 has been Member of Parliament for Hull East. In 1975, he became a member of the European Parliament, despite being opposed to Britain's membership in the European Community (now the European Union). A strong parliamentary debater and television performer, he was sometimes critical of his colleagues. In 1988 he unsuccessfully challenged for the deputy leadership, and again failed to win the post 1992. He was finally elected 1994, after losing to Anthony Blair in the contest for the leadership.
