Inhabitant of Portugal. The Portuguese have a mixed cultural heritage that can be traced back to the Lusitanian Celts who were defeated by the Romans about 140 bc. In the 5th century ad the Suebi, a Germanic group, overran the Iberian peninsula, and were later subdued by the Visigoths. In the 8th century ad S Portugal was invaded by the Moors. The Portuguese are predominantly Roman Catholic.
