Mountain system, “the backbone of England”, broken by a gap through which the river Aire flows to the E and the Ribble to the W; length (Scottish border to the Peaks in Derbyshire) 400 km/250 mi. It is the watershed for the main rivers of NE England. The rocks are carboniferous limestone and millstone grit, the land high moorland and fell.
