City in Virginia (USA).
Industrial city (engineering, shipbuilding) and port of SE Virginia, US, at the mouth of the James River; With neighboring Chesapeake, Norfolk, and Portsmouth, it forms the Port of Hampton Roads, one of the chief US ports. It is the site of one of the world's largest shipyards.
The site was settled by the British around 1620. During the Civil War the first battle between ironclad ships (the Monitor and the Merrimac) 1862 took place off Newport News at Hampton Roads.
