US fast-food chain, the largest in the world, specializing in hamburgers. In 1988 it served 13,000 customers every minute of the day and had 9,410 restaurants worldwide.
In Jan 1990 a branch of McDonald's opened in Moscow. In the West the company was criticized by environmentalists for uneconomic grazing land use (see meat) and for contributing to litter and the greenhouse effect by its packaging.
