(1795-1861) Canadian politician, born in Scotland. He emigrated to Canada 1820, and led the rebellion of 1837–38, an unsuccessful attempt to limit British rule and establish more democratic institutions in Canada. After its failure he lived in the US until 1849, and in 1851–58 sat in the Canadian legislature as a Radical. He was grandfather of W L Mackenzie King, the Liberal prime minister.
(1883-1972) Scottish author. He published his first novel The Passionate Elopement 1911. Later works were Carnival 1912, Sinister Street 1913–14 (an autobiographical novel), and the comic Whiskey Galore 1947. He published his autobiography in ten “octaves” (volumes) 1963–71.
His parents were actors. He was educated at Oxford University.
(1764-1820) British explorer and fur trader. In 1789, he was the first European to see the river, now part of N Canada, named for him. In 1792–93 he crossed the Rocky Mountains to the Pacific coast of what is now British Columbia, making the first known crossing north of Mexico.
He was knighted in 1807.
