“Leadbelly” (c. 1888-1949) US musician. Better known by his nickname, he was born in Mooringsport, Louisiana, and spent his early years as a farmhand. Drawn to music at an early age, he traveled throughout the South and became well known for his blues guitar playing. In 1934 he was “discovered” by visiting folklorists John and Alan Lomax, who helped him begin a professional concert and recording career. Ledbetter was an important source of inspiration for the urban folk movement of the 1950s. His rendition of ‘Good Night, Irene’ became a folk classic.
