Major international airport to the W of London in the Greater London borough of Hounslow, approximately 24 km/14 mi from the city center. Opened 1946, it is one of the world's busiest airports, with four terminals. It was linked with the London underground system 1977. It was the target of three mortar attacks by the Irish Republican Army (IRA) March 1994, all of which failed to detonate.
