Capital of Zimbabwe, on the Mashonaland plateau, about 1,525 m/5,000 ft above sea level; It is the center of a rich farming area (tobacco and corn), with metallurgical and food processing industries.
The British occupied the site 1890 and named it Fort Salisbury in honor of Lord Salisbury, then prime minister of the UK. It was capital of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland 1953–63.
