A port in southwestern Sweden; second largest city in Sweden; Also called: Goeteborg, Gothenburg.
(German Gothenburg) Port and industrial city (ships, vehicles, chemicals) on the west coast of Sweden, at the mouth of the Göta River; It is Sweden's second largest city and is linked with Stockholm by the Göta Canal (built 1832).
The city was founded 1619 by King Gustavus Adolphus. There is a cathedral (1633) and a technical university (1829).
