Belief that the church should be subordinated to the state. The name is derived from Thomas Erastus (1534–1583), a German-Swiss theologian and opponent of Calvinism, who maintained in his writings that the church should not have the power of excluding people as a punishment for sin.The doctrine that the state is supreme over the church in ecclesiastical matters; Also called: Byzantinism, Caesaropapism.
