(1894-1979) German composer. His work includes incidental music to Bertolt Brecht’s theater pieces; an opera, Der Verurteilung des Lukullus/The Trial of Lucullus 1949, also to a libretto by Brecht; and numerous choral works and songs.
He studied in Berlin, becoming a theater conductor until moving to Paris 1933, where he studied Schoenberg's serial method with René Leibowitz. He collaborated with Brecht from 1942, when they met as political exiles in the US, returning with him to East Berlin 1948.

City in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, on the river Mulde, 115 km/70 mi SW of Berlin; It is the former capital of Anhalt duchy and state. It manufactures chemicals, machinery, and chocolate and was the site of the Junkers airplane works. The Bauhaus school of art was based in Dessau 1925–33.
