Italian film director and actor. His Bicycle Thieves 1949 is a landmark of Italian neorealism. Later films included Umberto D 1955, Two Women 1960, and The Garden of the Finzi-Continis 1971. His considerable acting credits include The Earrings of Madame de ... 1953 and The Millionaires 1960.
He was born in Sora, Caserta.
He won four Academy Awards for best foreign film with Shoeshine 1946; Bicycle Thieves; Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow 1964; and The Garden of the Finzi-Continis.
