(1943-) US actor of great magnetism and physical presence. He won Academy Awards for his performances in The Godfather Part II 1974 and Raging Bull 1980, for which role he put on weight in the interests of authenticity as the boxer gone to seed, Jake LaMotta. His other films include Mean Streets 1973, Taxi Driver 1976, The Deer Hunter 1978, The Untouchables 1987, Midnight Run 1988, and Cape Fear 1991. He showed his versatility in The King of Comedy 1982 and other Martin Scorsese films. He directed A Bronx Tale 1993.
