(1931-1964) US soul singer and songwriter. He began his career as a gospel singer and turned to pop music 1956. His hits include ‘You Send Me’ 1957 and ‘Wonderful World’ 1960 (re-released 1986). His smooth tenor voice gilded some indifferent material, but his own song ‘A Change Is Gonna Come’ 1965 is a moving civil-rights anthem.

(1908-) British-born US journalist. He is best known for his writings interpreting US history and culture and for his role as television host of Omnibus and Masterpiece Theatre.
Cook
e studied theater at Yale and Harvard universities and returned to the US as a BBC correspondent 1938; he became a US citizen 1941. In 1947 he began his radio broadcast Letter from America for the BBC. During the 1970s, he hosted the BBC-produced television series America 1972–73 and followed this with the bestselling book Alistair Cooke’s America 1973, based on the series.
