Port and largest city of Alaska, US, at the head of Cook Inlet; Established 1918, Anchorage is an important center of administration, communication, and commerce. Oil and gas extraction and fish canning are also important to the local economy.
Two US military bases are nearby—Fort Richardson and Elmendorf Air Force Base. Alaska Pacific University and a branch of the University of Alaska are here. The Fur Rendezvous winter carnival is an annual event. The 1964 earthquake that killed 114 people was the most powerful in North American recorded history —8.4 on the Richter scale.
