(1933-) US critic, novelist, and screenwriter. Her novel The Benefactor appeared 1963, and she established herself as a critic with the influential cultural essays of Against Interpretation 1966 and Styles of Radical Will 1969. More recent studies, showing the influence of French structuralism, are On Photography 1976 and the powerful Illness as Metaphor 1978 and Aids and its Metaphors 1989.
