(1869-1946) US novelist. His novels for young people, which include Penrod 1914, are classics. He was among the best-selling authors of the early 20th century with works such as Monsieur Beaucaire 1900 and novels of the Midwest, including The Magnificent Ambersons 1918 (filmed 1942 by Orson Welles).
