Movement in French painting in the 1880s, an extension of Impressionist technique. It drew on contemporary theories on color and perception, building up form and color by painting dots side by side. Georges Seurat was the chief exponent; his minute technique became known as Pointillism. Paul Signac and Camille Pissarro practiced the style for a few years.
