Art movement, at its height in Germany and Italy in the 1970s and 1980s, which championed the revival of representational art, expressive brushwork, and a concern with narrative and history at the expense of Minimalist and Conceptual art forms. Leading exponents include Anselm Kiefer, Georg Baselitz (1928– ), and Francesco Clemente. In Italy the movement is known as Transavanguardia and in the us as Bad Painting.
