(1859-1941) French philosopher who believed that time, change, and development were the essence of reality. He thought that time was a continuous process in which one period merged imperceptibly into the next. In Creative Evolution 1907 he attempted to prove that all evolution and progress are due to the working of the élan vital, or life force. Nobel Prize for Literature 1928.
