Decoration of walls, vaults, and ceilings by means of fresco, oil, tempera, or encaustic painting methods. Murals were painted by the Minoans, the Greeks, and the Romans. Mural painters include Cimabue, Giotto, Masaccio, Ghirlandaio, and, in the 20th century, Diego Rivera and José Orozco of the Mexican muralist movement.
