Industrial city (chemicals, textiles, machinery) and capital of the Indre-et-Loire département, W central France, on the river Loire; It has a 13th–15th-century cathedral. An ancient city and former capital of Touraine, it was the site of the French defeat of the Arabs 732 under Charles Martel.
