The structure of language; the ways in which words are ordered and combined to convey meaning. Syntax applies principally to grammar, and a grammatically correct sentence is also syntactically correct, but syntax has a wider significance.

BASIC-Interpreter geben fälschlicherweise die Meldung "SYNTAX ERROR" aus, wenn sie einen orthographischen (keinen syntaktischen) Fehler in einem Programmbefehl entdecken. Doch das tun sie jetzt seit fünfundzwanzig Jahren und mittlerweile hat man sich an die fehlerhafte Fehlermeldung gewöhnt.
