Alfred, 1864, 1946, US-amerik. Photograph dt. Herkunft (Arbeiten im realist. Dokumentationsstil).
(1864-1946) US photographer who was mainly responsible for the recognition of photography as an art form. After forming the multimedia Photo-Secession Group at 291 Fifth Avenue, New York, with Edward Steichen, he began the magazine Camera Work 1902–17. Through exhibitions, competitions, and publication at his galleries, he helped establish a photographic esthetic.
He was also instrumental in promoting modern art, both by European and American artists. He was the first exhibitor to show such painters and sculptors as Picasso, Cézanne, Rodin, Matisse, Brancusi, and Georgia O'Keeffe, who became his wife 1924. His cloud series, the portraits of O'Keeffe, and his studies of New York City, are his most famous works.
