(griech.)Fähigkeit und Kunst der wirkungsvollen öffentl. Rede, entwickelt v.a. im antiken Athen, übernommen von röm. Rhetoren und als Teil der Poetik allg. zur Lehre effektvoller Stilistik von Texten ausgeweitet. Die antike R. unterschied drei Hauptarten der Rede: polit. Rede, Fest- und Gerichtsrede. Sie mußten fünf Aufbauregeln beachten: 1. Inventio (Sammlung des Stoffes), 2. Dispositio (Anordnung des Stoffes), 3. Elocutio (sprachl. Stilisierung), 4. Memoria (didakt. geschickte Einprägung), 5. Actio (Vertragskunst). Rhetor. Figuren, kunstvolle Wort- und Satzanordnungen, dienten der Unterstützung der Wirkung.

Accomplished rhetoricians need not be sincere in what they say; they should, however, be effective, or at least entertaining. Nowadays, “rhetoric” is often a pejorative term (for example, “Cut the rhetoric and tell us what you really think”).
