Reiche; 1215 von den Mongolen unter Dschingis Khan erobert; seit Kublai Khan (1280/1294) bis 1368 Residenz der Mongolendynastie, 1644/1911 der Mandschus, seit 1949 Hauptstadt der chin. Volksrepublik. Bauten: Rechteckige Anlage der 'Inneren Stadt' (12./13. Jh., auch 'Tatarenstadt' gen.), darin die ehemalige Kaiserstadt der Mandschu (2.6 x 2.8 km), in diese wiederum eingeschlossen die 'Verbotene Stadt' (Kaiserpalast, 1406 ff.). An deren Südrand der Tien-an-men-Platz, umgeben von Monumentalbauten (u.a. Tor des himml. Friedens, 1651). In der 'Inneren Stadt' auch der Pei-hai-Park mit See und Weißer Pagode (1651) und der 'Tempel der Weißen Pagode' (gegr. im 11. Jh., 1457 erneuert), der Trommelturm (1420) und der Lamatempel (1745). Außerhalb der alten Mauern der 'Inneren Stadt' liegen zahlreiche weitere Tempel, u.a. in der 'Chinesen-' oder 'Äußeren Stadt' der 'Himmelstempel' mit der sog. History
Beijing, founded 2,000 years ago, was the 13th-century capital of the Mongol emperor Kublai Khan. Later replaced by Nanking, it was again capital from 1421, except from 1928 to 1949, when it was renamed Peiping. Beijing was held by Japan 1937–45.
