His low-key realistic accounts of complex espionage include The Spy Who Came in from the Cold 1963, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy 1974, Smiley’s People 1980, The Russia House 1989, and The Night Manager 1993. He was a member of the Foreign Service 1960–64.
