(Augustine Aloysius) (1882-1941) Irish writer. He revolutionized the form of the English novel with his “stream of consciousness” technique. His works include Dubliners 1914 (short stories), Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man 1916, Ulysses 1922, and Finnegans Wake 1939.
Ulysses, which records the events of a single Dublin day, experiments with language and combines direct narrative with the unspoken and unconscious reactions of the characters. Banned at first for obscenity in the US and the UK, it enjoyed great impact. It was first published in Paris, where Joyce settled after World War I.
