Gründung war zunächst Hauptstadt des annamit. Tonking-Königreichs, bis es im 17. Jh. von Hue abgelöst wurde. Von 1883 bis 1946 regierten die Franzosen von H. aus Indochina, 1954 wurde H. Hauptstadt von N-Vietnam, 1976 von ganz Vietnam.
