Assistance of women in childbirth. Traditionally, it was undertaken by experienced specialists; in modern medical training it is a nursing specialty for practitioners called midwives.
The English physician William Harvey's 1653 work on generation contained an influential chapter on labor. Dr Peter Chamberlen II (1560–1631) made an important contribution to midwifery, particularly with his development of the first midwifery forceps.
