B., Hirudo medicinalis, 1015 cm langer Egel des Süßwassers, Blutsauger, in Dtld. selten geworden; med. zum Blutschröpfen verwendet.(Egel Hirudinea), Ordnung der Ringel-Würmer mit rd. 300 überwiegend im Wasser lebenden Arten, z.T. blutsaugend (das Blut wird in seitl. Magenblindsäcken gesammelt). Bekannteste Art ist der Medizin. B. (Hirudo medicinalis), der in flachen, stehenden Gewässern Eurasiens vorkommt. Er kann bis zu 15 cm³ Blut aufnehmen und wird in der Heilkunde zum Schröpfen (bei Entzündungen, Blutstauungen, Krampfadern) verwendet.

Annelid worm forming the class Hirudinea. Leeches inhabit fresh water, and in tropical countries infest damp forests. As bloodsucking animals they are injurious to people and animals, to whom they attach themselves by means of a strong mouth adapted to sucking.
Formerly, the medicinal leech Hirudo medicinalis was used extensively for “bleeding” for a variety of ills. It is still cultivated as the source of the anticoagulant hirudin.
