H(erbert) G(eorge) (1866-1946) English writer. He is best remembered for his “scientific romances” such as The Time Machine 1895 and The War of the Worlds 1898. His later novels had an antiestablishment, anticonventional humor remarkable in its day, for example Kipps 1905 and Tono-Bungay 1909. His many other books include Outline of History 1920 and The Shape of Things to Come 1933, a number of his prophecies from which have since been fulfilled. He also wrote many short stories.
