Bei der Verdauung wird die Nahrung mechanisch zerkleinert, mit Verdauungssekreten wie dem Bauchspeichel und der Galle gemischt und durch Enzyme in kleine Bestandteile abgebaut, die dann aus dem Darm in Blut oder Lymphe aufgenommen werden können.
Digestion, mechan. u. chem. Aufarbeitung der Nahrung in resorptionsfähige Stoffe bei Mensch u. Tier; insbes. durch Drüsen, die bes. Enzyme in das V.ssystem abgeben. Sie spalten die großen Nahrungsmoleküle durch Wasseranlagerung in kleine Bestandteile: Eiweiß in Aminosäuren, Fette in Glycerin u. Fettsäuren, Polysaccharide (Stärke, Glykogen) in Monosaccharide.

Process whereby food eaten by an animal is broken down mechanically, and chemically by enzymes, mostly in the stomach and intestines, to make the nutrients available for absorption and cell metabolism.
In some single-celled organisms, such as amebas, a food particle is engulfed by the cell and digested in a vacuole within the cell.
