Die Regulierung des Sättigungsgefühls erfolgt im wesentlichen über das Gehirn. Eine wichtige Rolle spielt dabei der Zustand der Magenfüllung. Ist der Magen gefüllt, tritt das Sättigungsgefühl jedoch nicht sofort ein, da die Regulationsmechanismen Zeit brauchen aktiv zu werden. Schnelles Essen und Lebensmittel mit hoher Energiedichte führen deshalb zu einer Verminderung des "Sättigungseffektes" der Nahrung.
