She published three volumes of short stories (Flowing Judas 1930, Pale Horse, Pale Rider 1939, and The Leaning Tower 1944); a collection of essays, The Days Before 1952; and the allegorical novel Ship of Fools 1962 (filmed 1965). Her Collected Short Stories 1965 won a Pulitzer Prize.
Born in Indian Creek, Texas, Porter began her writing career after high school, working on newspapers and as a freelance, and lived in Mexico and then in Europe. (Albert) (1891-1964) US composer and lyricist of witty musical comedies. His shows include The Gay Divorce 1932 (filmed 1934 as The Gay Divorcee), Anything Goes 1934, Kiss Me, Kate 1948, and Silk Stockings 1955. He also wrote movie musicals, such as Born to Dance 1936 and High Society 1956.
Born in Indiana of an affluent family, Porter attended Yale and Harvard universities, then did military service during World War I. He became a member of the fashionable set in Europe during the 1920s and established himself with the revue Paris 1928. His clever, sophisticated lyrics and appealing melodies have made many of his songs standards, including ‘Night and Day’, ‘I Get a Kick Out of You’, ‘Begin the Beguine’, ‘My Heart Belongs to Daddy’, and ‘You’re the Tops’. + prikaži više

(1920-) English chemist. From 1947 he and Ronald Norrish developed a technique by which flashes of high energy are used to bring about extremely fast chemical reactions. They shared a Nobel Prize 1967.
Porter was born in Stainforth, Yorkshire, and studied at Leeds. After World War II he carried out research at Cambridge under Norrish. Porter was professor at Sheffield 1955–66, director of the Royal Institution 1966–85, and president of the Royal Society 1985–90. In the 1960s he made many appearances on British television.
Porter began using quick flashes of light to study transient species in chemical reactions, particularly free radicals and excited states of molecules. In 1950 he could detect entities that exist for less than a microsecond; by 1975, using laser beams, he had reduced the time limit to a picosecond (10-12 sec). His early work dealt with reactions involving gases (mainly chain reactions and combustion reactions), but he later extended the technique to solutions and also studied the processes that occur in the first nanosecond of photosynthesis in plants. (1917-1985) English biochemist. In 1962 he proposed a structure for human immunoglobulin (antibody) in which the molecule was seen as consisting of four chains. He was awarded the 1972 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine.
Porter was born in Liverpool and studied there and at Cambridge. He became professor of immunology at St Mary's Hospital Medical School, London, 1960; from 1967 he was professor of biochemistry at Oxford.
Basing his research on the work of US immunologist Karl Landsteiner, Porter studied the structural basis of the biological activities of antibodies, proposing in 1962 a structure for gamma-globulin. He also worked on the structure, assembly, and activation mechanisms of the components of a substance known as complement. This is a protein that is normally present in the blood, but disappears from the serum during most antigen–antibody reactions.
