A loose material consisting of grains of rock or coral.
Loose grains of rock, sized 0.0625–2.00 mm/0.0025–0.08 in in diameter, consisting chiefly of quartz, but owing their varying color to mixtures of other minerals. Sand is used in cement-making, as an abrasive, in glass-making, and for other purposes.
Sands are classified into marine, freshwater, glacial, and terrestrial. Some “light” soils contain up to 50% sand. Sands may eventually consolidate into sandstone.

2. Nettoyé(e) par projection de sable avec une sableuse. Façade sablée.
3. Se dit d'une pâte ŕ gâteaux plutôt friable contenant beaucoup de beurre.
4. Du gâteau lui-même fait avec une telle pâte. Petit sablé.
5. Par confusion avec sabré (coupé au sabre) du Champagne jaillissant de la bouteille dont on a cassé le goulot. Champagne sablé.
Gravier réduit en poudre ou en petits grains que l'on trouve sur certaines plages, sur le bord ou dans les rivières et dont on fait le mortier.
