One of the four basic operations of arithmetic, usually written in the form a x b or ab, and involving repeated addition in the sense that a is added to itself b times. Multiplication obeys commutative, associative, and distributive laws (the latter over addition) and every number (except 0) has a multiplicative inverse. The number 1 is the identity for multiplication.
