Strong sympathy for both sides existed, but the state remained part of the Union during the Civil War; many battles and skirmishes fostered a general lawlessness that continued in the postwar exploits of such bandits as Jesse and Frank James.
While St Louis was eclipsed by Chicago as the commercial center of the Midwest, Kansas City benefited from the growth of the railroads. Increasingly urbanized and industrialized in the 20th century, Missouri is second to Michigan in producing automobiles and ranks high in aerospace production.

It is formed by the confluence of the Jefferson, Gallatin, and Madison rivers in SW Montana and flows SE through the states of Montana, North Dakota, and South Dakota to Sioux City, Iowa, where it turns S and forms the borders between Iowa and Nebraska and between Kansas and Missouri. Kansas City, Missouri, is the largest city on its banks. Since 1944 the muddy, turbulent river has been tamed by a series of locks and dams for irrigation and flood control.
