Diving seabird of the auk family that breeds in large numbers on rocky N Atlantic and Pacific coasts. The common guillemot Uria aalge has a sharp bill and short tail, and sooty-brown and white plumage. The black guillemot Cepphus grylle of northern coasts is mostly black, with orange legs when breeding. Guillemots build no nest, but lay one large, almost conical egg.
