A high-level programming language designed under the direction of the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) in the late 1970s and intended to be the primary language for DoD software development. Originally based on Pascal, Ada supports real-time operations and multitasking. The language was named after Augusta Ada Byron, who assisted Charles Babbage in developing programs for his Analytical Engine, the first mechanical computer, in the nineteenth century.
