Industrial city (chemicals, textiles, machinery) and capital of the Indre-et-Loire département, W central France, on the river Loire; It has a 13th–15th-century cathedral. An ancient city and former capital of Touraine, it was the site of the French defeat of the Arabs 732 under Charles Martel. Tours became the French capital for four days during World War II.
