(1609-1642) English Cavalier poet and dramatist. An ardent Royalist, he played an active part in the Civil War, fleeing to France where he may have committed suicide. His chief lyrics appeared in Fragmenta Aurea and include his best-known one, “Why so pale and wan, fond lover?”
He tried to effect Lord Strafford's escape from the Tower of London.
