Any birthmark, mole, or colored spot on the skin, especially the kind called a “port-wine mark”. This is a maroon-colored area of the skin, consisting of a mass of small blood vessels.
A nevus of moderate size is harmless, and such marks are usually disguised cosmetically unless they are extremely disfiguring, when they can sometimes be treated by cutting out, by burning with an electric needle, by freezing with carbon dioxide snow, or by argon laser treatment.
